The image of Napoleon Bonaparte is closely linked to the town of Monza: the iron crown with which he was crowned King of Italy on 26 May 1805 in the Duomo of Milan is now kept in the altar of the chapel of Theodelinde of Bavaria in the town's Duomo, a copy of which was installed on Napoleon's sarcophagus when his body was brought back to Paris from the island of St Helena.

Villa Reale in Monza and its park are the Napoleonic landmarks par excellence. Following Napoleon's order in 1805, work began on the Villa Reale park, with the aim of turning it into a model agricultural estate and hunting reserve. The work was completed in three years, under the supervision of Viceroy Eugène de Beauharnais, Josephine's son and a highly influential figure in the city.

One of the events that linked Napoleon to Monza was the order for around 15,000 felt hats from the city's factories for the army of the Cisalpine Republic. This event was an opportunity to make Monza known throughout the world, and allowed the hat industry, which had already been active since the 13th century, to flourish.
