Villa Crivelli limbiate

LIMBIATE

Limbiate represents an important chapter in European history between the 18th and 19th centuries and is the meeting point of Napoleon's public and private life. The French general established his summer headquarters in Villa Crivelli, in the district of Mombello, moving his family here and organising the wedding of his sisters Elisa and Paolina in 1797, respectively to General Charles Emmanuel Leclerc and Felice Baciocchi.

The historian De Castro reports that: "Napoleon had returned to Milan, but irritated by the noise, he retired to Mombello in the Villa de Crivelli to think and wait [...] In Mombello, one can see the salon where the future emperor held his court and dined publicly". It was here that the birth of the Cisalpine Republic was discussed and the foundation of the Campoformio Treaty with Austria,

signed in October 1797, was established. In the same year, on the night of 14th June, the double wedding of Elisa and Paolina was celebrated in the Oratory of St. Francis (an architectural gem next to the Villa), thanks to the mediation of Napoleon, who obtained a dispensation from the Archbishop of Milan to celebrate the wedding in the private oratory.
