Auxonne

A former border town nestling on the banks of the Saône, Auxonne is a must for tourists wishing to discover the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.

This former stronghold with its historic heritage hints at a prestigious military past, thanks in particular to the two stays of Napoleon Bonaparte, who trained at the Royal Artillery School from 1788 to 1791. He was 19 at the time. Imperial tours« are offered regularly by the Tourist Office.

Many traces of Napoleon's time can be seen in Auxonne today: a statue, a reconstructed room in the Regiment, a sundial designed by the future Emperor, the Napoleon oak tree, the Bonaparte Museum (currently closed), etc.

Auxonne is the only town in Burgundy to have been home to a regiment since 1956: the 511th Train Regiment.

The Train Regiments were created by Napoleon in a decree signed in Ostroda in 1807. The towns of Ostroda and Auxonne are now twinned.

In 2023, Auxonne hosted the «Napoleonic Days». 400 re-enactors set up their bivouac around the château and organised a battle re-enactment and numerous events. The next event is planned for 2027.
