As a skilled botanist, Empress Josephine imported two hundred plants that she loved in Martinique, her native land. Magnolias, peonies, mimosas, camellias and jasmines made their appearance in the metropolis. Her rose garden, composed of more than two hundred and fifty species, and her greenhouse were her pride and joy. Napoleon came himself one year after her death in 1814 in this place to meditate on so many memories, before leaving for exile, in Sainte Hélène.

Rueil-Malmaison, strong of its natural heritage and its rich hours, is not only a city of the past, that of Richelieu, Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais or the cradle of the impressionist painters. Henri IV spent time there, just like Louis XIII and his minister Richelieu, who had his castle there.
Louis XIV, as a child, came here to flee the Parisian sling. Bonaparte and Josephine sheltered their love affairs there. Napoleon III gave the church the most beautiful Cavaillé-Coll organ, in memory of his mother who was buried in the city. Thanks to the Napoleonic Era, the site has gained international prestige.
