The network Destination Napoléon continues to inspire new cultural experiences in European cities with an imperial heritage. In Venice, the tour operator Top Venice is now offering a dedicated programme of tours exploring the town from the perspective of the Napoleonic period, with several themed itineraries combining history, heritage, art and landscapes.
Top Venice is already involved in promoting a number of European cultural itineraries, including Destination Napoléon and Iter Vitis, both of which have been certified as Cultural Routes by the Council of Europe, as well as the Via Querinissima, a European itinerary that has not yet been certified. The presentation page highlights a top-of-the-range experience, built around private visits and personalised support.
Another reading of Venice through the Napoleonic legacy
Between 1797 and 1814, Venice underwent profound political, urban and cultural transformations. Top Venice reminds us that this period marked a veritable re-reading of the ancient Serenissima, whose monumental spaces, institutions and certain urban balances were reorganised as part of Napoleon's project. The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the city through the traces left by this pivotal period, when Venice became part of a wider European history.
This proposal is fully in line with the spirit of the’Council of Europe Cultural Route Destination Napoléon, Top Venice is a certified partner. It illustrates the way in which Napoleonic heritage can now be promoted through a structured, high-quality tourist offer that is accessible to an international public.
Three itineraries to discover Napoleonic Venice
To bring this page of history to life, Top Venice has designed three thematic experiments, each highlighting a different facet of Napoleon's influence on the city.
Napoleon the strategist: the imperial city and the Arsenal
The first route looks at Napoleon's political and urban vision. In particular, you can discover Saint Mark's Square, which was radically redefined after 1797 with the creation of the’Napoleonic wing, the Doge's Palace, the island of San Giorgio Maggiore as well as the Arsenal, transformed into a modern industrial complex serving the imperial machine. This tour lasts 3 hours, of which 2 hours on foot and 1 hour by private boat.
Napoleon the patron: art, music and power in Venice
The second set of experiences focuses on Venetian cultural life in the Napoleonic era and how the arts were mobilised in the service of a new political vision. The venues on offer include the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory (Palazzo Pisani), with privileged backstage access and a private musical performance, Teatro La Fenice, presented as an official stage of power under the French occupation, as well as the Gallerie dell'Accademia, These are housed in a former religious complex secularised by Napoleonic decree in 1807. Each of these tours is scheduled to last approximately 2 hours.
Napoleon the visionary: secret gardens and vineyards
The third itinerary invites visitors to discover a lesser-known aspect of Napoleon's legacy in Venice: the transformation of the urban landscape and the creation of public green spaces. The itinerary includes the Napoleonic Gardens of Castello, San Francesco della Vigna, the Redentore garden on the Giudecca and the Royal Gardens, restored and reopened to the public in 2019. This experience lasts 4 hours and offers an original approach, combining landscape heritage, religious memory and urban redevelopment.
A tourism offering to enhance our heritage
Through this programme, Top Venice offers an original and sensitive interpretation of Venice, in which Napoleon's heritage becomes the guiding thread for a tailor-made cultural discovery. In this way, the tour operator is putting its expertise to work to create an offer that combines historical mediation, quality of welcome and privileged discovery of emblematic sites.
This initiative is a fine example of how to promote tourism for heritage linked to the Destination Napoléon. It shows how imperial history can be translated into a tangible experience for visitors, by combining cultural mediation, quality of welcome and promotion of the city's emblematic sites.
