The Greek municipality of Ierapetra has officially joined the European Federation of Napoleonic Cities.
The signing ceremony for the membership certificate took place in the presence of Charles Bonaparte, Honorary President of the Federation, at the Khale fortress. The ceremony was attended by Emmanuel Fragoulis, Mayor of Ierapetra, Giannis Androulakis, Deputy Regional Governor of Lassithios, Chrysa Sofianou, Director of Antiquities at Lassithi, Christoforos Charalambakis, Professor of Linguistics and member of the Academy of Athens, and Patricia Masouraki of the Ministry of Culture.
A large number of visitors attended this special event, which featured a play depicting the arrival of Napoleon the Great in Ierapetra, followed by the screening of a short film focusing on General Napoleon's visit to the town.
After the Greek and French national anthems, accompanied by fireworks, Cretan music by Vangelis Vardakis and Giorgos Fragakis and traditional dances by the Cretan Dance Association, the Mayor gave Mr Bonaparte a tour of the "Maison Napoléon".
New prospects and projects to be developed as part of the Federation and the Destination-Napoleon route were also discussed.
