Learn more about the Siege of Almeida and its fortress
The Siege of Almeida in 1810 was a crucial event during the Peninsular War. Almeida was one of Portugal's primary strongholds along the Spanish border, and its strategic location made it an essential point of defense. During the siege, French forces under Marshal Ney launched a concerted attack, aiming to break through the Portuguese defenses. Despite the valiant defense by the Portuguese garrison, Almeida eventually fell on August 28, 1810, after a devastating explosion in the fortress’s powder magazine caused by a French bombardment.
The catastrophic explosion is one of the most memorable moments in the town's history. It was described as a "volcanic eruption," with enormous blocks of stone hurled through the air and a significant portion of the fortress destroyed. Despite this, Almeida's walls remain standing as a testament to its resilience, and visitors to the fortress today can still see remnants of the castle and fortifications that endured centuries of conflict.
Built in the 17th century, the Fortress of Almeida is an impressive example of military architecture. Designed to withstand artillery fire, it was a key defense point on the Portuguese-Spanish border. Featuring a complex system of bulwarks, ravelins, moats, and star-shaped walls, much of the fortress's original design remains visible today. Despite suffering significant damage during the catastrophic explosion in 1810, Almeida's walls still stand as a testament to its resilience and the turbulent history it has witnessed.
An invitation to explore
In addition to the historical re-enactments, the event will also provide a chance for visitors to interact with participants dressed in Napoleonic-era military uniforms, representing soldiers from Portugal, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. After the battles, the public is invited to mingle with the soldiers, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.
Visitors can also explore the fortress and appreciate its geometric splendor, while also learning about its tumultuous past. For history enthusiasts, the event offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the most significant military structures in Portugal.
Almeida is a member of the European Federation of Napoleonic Cities, and part of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal, a network of 12 historic villages in the region, which offer a deeper exploration of Portugal’s cultural heritage.
