The Dos de Mayo uprising of 1808 is the name given to the rebellion of the people of Madrid against the occupation of the city by the French. The blood spilt at the time was the signal for the beginning of the struggle throughout Spain against the invading troops. In the evening, an edict was signed in the city of Móstoles in which all Spaniards were called upon to take up arms against the invader.

On 2 May, Móstoles (province of Madrid) commemorates the uprising against Napoleon Bonaparte's French troops, an event that has been declared a festival of national tourist interest. The festivities are reminiscent of the famous proclamation of the mayors Andrés Torrejón and Simón Hernández on 2 May 1808, which marked the beginning of the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814). On this occasion, around 300 members of local associations,

dressed in period costumes, stage these important historical events for Spain and recreate the characteristic atmosphere of Goya's time. The festivities also include a week of activities such as concerts, food tastings, workshops, sports tournaments, children's activities and various parades.
