The Italian campaign began with a French victory at the Battle of Montenotte. The army of the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia retreated through the mountains to protect the access to Piedmont, until the battle of Millesimo, a town in the province of Savona in Liguria, on 13 April 1796, won by the French army over the Sardinians of General Provera. Bonaparte then launched his army in a relentless race westwards against the Austro-Sardinian forces of Colli.
